We have published a series of blogs on recruitment of digital marketers. Blog,’ The 5 Ws of recruitment’ deals with the ‘whys’ and ‘When’ of hiring of digital marketers vis-à-vis out-sourcing the service. The benefits of using social media as recruitment tool, suggests where to look for desirable candidates. Let us now discuss how to prospect for the right digital marketing professional.
The first step is to be sure of your requirement. Are you looking for a generalist or a specialist in one of the sub-disciplines like Content Writing and management; Email marketing; Social media networking; SEO; Web analytics; B2C; B2B etc. It may be nice to hire a person with multitasking abilities, but it is always advisable to hire hard core expert in a particular sub-discipline who may have some working knowledge of some other sub-discipline as well . Remember ’A jack of all trades and master of none’ may help you maintain status quo but may not have ability and time to provide the necessary impetus to your digital marketing efforts.
The second step is to prepare a detailed desired pen picture of the person you are looking for; What kind of career road map should the person expect etc. Include a brief about your organisation, like its annual turnover; vision statement etc. Post the ad on social media platforms. This is where digital marketers would be active. Thus your ad will not only be seen by the job seekers but also those who are already working but may get enticed by what you have to offer.
Another step is to look for referrals from within your team. Let your employees know about the upcoming vacancy. Let them share it in their social media groups or refer their ex-colleagues who may be interested.
Once the list of aspirants is compiled, start sieving out chaff from the heap. For this, you should go through every ones social media accounts to see the kind of activity the person has been engaged in.
- Are his /her accounts active or dormant? If a person is not active he/ she would be bereft of new ideas and approach. Such a person may not bring anything new to the table.
- Does one stand out as a thought leader? This would indicate a person’s aptitude for new ideas and innovation. This will also highlight the person’s communication skills.
- Check the kind of groups he is associated with on social media. This will be a good indicator for the individual’s cultural and social background. This will help you to see if the person fits well in your organisation.
The candidates thus shortlisted can be called for one to one interview. Give a small project to him /her to evaluate his/ her skill levels. Evaluate the individual’s knowledge of the latest trends in digital marketing.
A person thus selected is most likely to take your digital marketing effort to a new high. It will, then on, be your job to retain the employee by providing a good working environment and an opportunity to grow.
